This year Tu B’Shevat, Jewish Arbor Day, New Year For Trees, is on January 26, 2013. To celebrate the day we eat new fruits, or food from the seven species described in the Bible as growing in Israel : wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates.

In Israel, the Holiday is honored by planting trees.

In the 16th century, Kabbalists developed a seder type meal for this day.  At the seder,  the spiritual significance of fruits and of the seven species were discussed. Previously held only in Sephardic communities, today many Ashkenazim have also adopted the Tu B’Shevat seder. The Seder is also celebrated by Jewish environmentalists.
